Kia Rent-to-Own: How These Car Agreements Work

Rent-to-own car agreements appeal to drivers who want a vehicle but cannot get, or do not want, a traditional auto loan. You pay a deposit, make regular payments while driving the car, and take ownership once the contract is complete. Before signing, it pays to understand exactly what you are agreeing to.

It is usually not a factory program

Kia does not run a single nationwide rent-to-own program. These deals are typically offered by individual dealerships, buy-here-pay-here lots or third-party lease-to-own companies. Terms vary widely from one provider to the next, so read each contract on its own merits.

How payments are structured

Payments may be weekly, every two weeks or monthly. The amount depends on the car's price, the size of your deposit and the length of the agreement. A bigger deposit lowers the payment, but you may lose it if you cannot finish the contract. Ask whether your payments are reported to the credit bureaus. If they are, on-time payments can help rebuild your score.

Read the fine print

Count the full cost

Add up the deposit, every payment, insurance, registration and taxes, fuel and maintenance. Then compare that total with what the same car would cost through a credit union loan or a standard lease. Rent-to-own is often the most expensive path to ownership, even when the weekly payment looks small.

Warranty and insurance

A newer Kia may still have factory warranty coverage, but it may not cover wear items. Most agreements require full coverage insurance, which can be costly for drivers with a limited history. Get an insurance quote before you sign.

Bottom line

Rent-to-own can work as a stepping stone if your credit rules out other options. Compare at least three offers, get every term in writing and make sure the total cost fits comfortably in your budget.
